Reefton Goldfield Historical mining in the Reefton Goldfield started in 1872, and by its close, had produced 2 million ounces of gold from high-grade underground operations in orogenic quartz vein systems. In 1951 the shaft of the Blackwater mine at Waiuta collapsed, having reached a depth of 700 metres.
