Definition

Lithium chemical products (carbonate or hydroxide) that meet purity specifications required for lithium-ion battery manufacturing, typically 99.5% or higher purity. Battery-grade material commands premium pricing over industrial-grade lithium.

Why it matters

Mining lithium and producing battery-grade chemical are different businesses. Concentrate is a commodity; qualified battery-grade product sells into long-term offtake at far better margins, and qualification with a cathode maker takes years.

Where people go wrong

A company describing itself as a battery-metals producer may be selling spodumene concentrate to a converter, which is a very different position in the value chain.
