Tailings

What remains after the metal is removed — the ground rock and process water a mine must store permanently.

Definition

The waste material left over after ore has been processed to extract valuable minerals. Tailings are typically stored in engineered facilities called tailings dams and must be managed to prevent environmental impacts.

Why it matters

Tailings storage is among the largest capital items and by far the largest long-tail liability. Dam failures have ended companies, and permitting increasingly turns on storage design rather than on the mining itself.

In practice

Dry-stack tailings cost more upfront and remove the dam failure mode entirely. Seeing it in a study is a signal about both risk appetite and the jurisdiction's expectations.
