Magnetic Rare Earths

The four rare earths used in permanent magnets: neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium.

Definition

Rare earth elements used in permanent magnet production, primarily neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium. These elements are critical for electric vehicle motors, wind turbine generators, and various high-tech applications.

Why it matters

These carry nearly all the economic value in the rare earth basket. Everything else in a deposit is largely a by-product, and some of it is oversupplied to the point of being a disposal cost.
