Cobalt Hydroxide

The intermediate cobalt product shipped from mine to refinery.

Definition

An intermediate cobalt product (Co(OH)2) produced at some cobalt mines and refined into cobalt sulphate for battery cathode production. Cobalt hydroxide offers transportability advantages and flexibility in the cobalt supply chain.

In practice

Most DRC cobalt travels as hydroxide for refining elsewhere. A project selling hydroxide is exposed to refining margins it does not control.
