Lithium Hydroxide (LiOH)

The lithium chemical required for high-nickel cathodes, generally produced from hard rock.

Definition

A chemical compound preferred for high-energy-density batteries, particularly in electric vehicle applications. Lithium hydroxide generally commands a price premium over lithium carbonate due to superior battery performance characteristics.

Why it matters

High-nickel NMC cathodes need hydroxide because carbonate does not work well at those compositions. Which chemical a project can make determines which customers it can even approach.
